Töten ist ein grundlegendes Merkmal der Tier-Mensch-Beziehung, das in offensichtliche ebenso wie in latente Begründungszusammenhänge eingebunden ist. In diesem Band werden insbesondere Tiertötungen fokussiert, die auf einen wie auch immer gearteten >>höheren Zweck<< gerichtet sind: als gottgefällige Opferhandlung, zu Repräsentationszwecken wie in der Hohen Jagd oder unter dem Primat des Kunstschaffens. Ausgehend vom Gedanken der Zweckgerichtetheit von Tiertötungen hinterfragen die Beiträge den damit postulierten Sinn kritisch und lassen so die Strukturen und Bedingungen des Tötens von Tieren zutage treten. Killing is a fundamental characteristic of the relationship between humans and animals, which is bound up in both manifest and latent justifications for the practice. In this volume, particular focus is given to the killing of animals in ways which are said to be for some kind of 'higher purpose', be they sacrifices to appease the gods, representational purposes such as big game hunting, or in the service of art. Departing from the notion that the killing of animals is justified, the book's chapters critically scrutinize this idea, thereby bringing to light the structures and conditions of the killing of animals.
